We should measure our educational system by how our kids do relative to their potential, not how they do relative to their neighbors. It is just as important -- and just as hard -- to help each and every one of our students be all they can be. "Closing the achievement gap" is a mistake because it encourages us to do less than our best in some cases. It is always easier to bring the best students down than it is to bring the other students up.
